How It All Began
Updated: Jan 5, 2019
For my first blog post on this website, I thought I would share a little about when, where and how photography became such an important part of my life.
I chose this photo for my first entry because it really represents the beginning of my two great passions. At the tender age of 18, while traveling and performing with Ashton's Circus in Australia, someone captured this image of me hanging out the window of the circus train with my trusty Pentax 35mm. I loved that camera, the way that it felt in my hands, the snap of the shutter, the images it produced. My mother bought it used for my high school graduation present and I have been hooked ever since.
I remember the very first time that I stepped onto a circus lot in my youth and exactly how it felt, every sensation. I knew without a doubt that this would be my life, at least for a while. For the next decade or so, the circus instilled in me the two great passions in my life: travel and photography. Even though I retired from the circus in my early twenties, travel and capturing images with cameras have been constants in my life ever since.
I have never had a conscious interest in creating "art" with my camera, rather, I love capturing moments, freezing an instant in time of the places and of the lives of people that I encounter as I travel the world. I want to document not just what I see, but as much as possible, create an image to recall what that moment felt like, the emotions, smells, tastes and impacts of those brief encounters. I do not give my images titles and I rarely write any commentary or explanation, I prefer to allow others to find their own meaning or see them as they are intended, just a moment in time.
Henry David Thoreau once said "It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see". The images on this site are what I see.
When I am making photographs I often like to work on "projects". In future blog posts, I will share what I am working on why. If you have any interest in receiving updates on additions to this site, drop me a note using the contact form on the "ABOUT ME" page and I will add you to the update list.
Thank you for visiting this site and best wishes always!
